Food Dyes

I am interested in natural dyes through the lens of preservation. It extends our experience of the ephemeral nature of plants by retaining its color in fabric. With an intense repulsion towards waste and an impulse to appreciate the things that have provided nourishment to me, I have continued a practice of preserving the image and essence of the food I eat through bundle dyeing. I use the heat of hot compost to effectively transfer these images. These fabrics, made with traditional linen, are meant to be used as napkins. The gesture of wiping your mouth with napkins that are stained with past eaten food and compost represents a completion of the perpetual cycle of growing, eating, and breaking down. Furthermore I am interested in how my attempt to preserve will eventually lead to the gradual deterioration of the fabric itself.
